That Voice in Your Head

We all have it. That relentless voice that says:

  • “You’re not ready.”
  • “You’ll mess this up.”
  • “Who do you think you are?”

It’s the inner critic and if you’ve ever felt like your confidence cracks under pressure, this voice is the reason.

Here’s the truth: your inner critic isn’t proof that something is wrong with you. It’s your brain trying to keep you safe. Safe, in your brain’s language, means familiar. It doesn’t care if you’re happy it cares if you’re comfortable.

How the Inner Critic Steals Confidence

The critic keeps you second-guessing. It tells you to wait until you’re more prepared, more qualified, more perfect. And as long as you listen, you stay stuck.

The cost? You never fully trust yourself. You hesitate instead of owning your voice. You play small when you were meant to shine.

Three Ways to Quiet the Inner Critic

Confidence doesn’t come from silencing the critic forever. It comes from learning how to turn down its volume and choose a different story.

  • Call it out. Give your critic a name. Mine has shown up like a bossy roommate in my head. Naming it separates it from you.
  • Gather evidence. Keep an evidence journal. Write down every win, every moment you felt proud, every time you did something you didn’t think you could. When the critic gets loud, flip through and remind yourself of the proof.
  • Shift your words. Language shapes how you feel. Swap “I’ll never get this right” for “I’m learning.” Change “I can’t handle this” to “I can figure this out.”

Confidence Redefined

Confidence isn’t about never doubting yourself. It’s about knowing who you are, trusting that you’ll show up, and reminding yourself you can handle anything even with the critic whispering.
